ng serve: This site can’t be reached

I created a new angular project today (ng new upgrade-to-angular) but when I tried to fire it up using ng serve I got a weird error: The site could not be reached.

It took me a few minutes to spot the error. Chrome was redirecting me to HTTPS (note the “s” at the end).

To fix the problem I had to empty the cache and hard reload.

  • Open the Developer Tools panel (F12)
  • Right-click the reload icon
  • Choose “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”

You will hit this problem if you have ever served any pages over HTTPS on localhost.
